2027 federal holidays: the days off, and the Fridays banks stay open
2027 has eleven federal holidays and three of them fall on a weekend, with a fourth weekend holiday waiting on January 1, 2028. When that happens, most federal employees get the nearest weekday off instead. That much is on every calendar. What is not: on the three Fridays given in place of a Saturday holiday, the Federal Reserve Banks stay open, and one of those Fridays, December 31, 2027, is listed in next year's table, not this year's.
Every 2027 federal holiday
Names as the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) writes them. "Day off" is the day most federal employees are off. The last column is the Federal Reserve's own rule for its banks.

The Federal Reserve's footnote reads: "For holidays falling on Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches will be open the preceding Friday; however, the Board of Governors will be closed." For a Sunday holiday, all Federal Reserve offices close on the Monday.
The weekend rule, and where it comes from
Federal law sets the holidays (5 U.S.C. 6103). OPM applies the weekend rule: when a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most federal employees the Friday before is treated as the holiday; when it falls on a Sunday, the Monday after. In 2027 that moves four days off:
- Juneteenth, Saturday June 19: off Friday June 18.
- Independence Day, Sunday July 4: off Monday July 5.
- Christmas Day, Saturday December 25: off Friday December 24.
- New Year's Day 2028, Saturday January 1: off Friday December 31, 2027.
"Most federal employees" is OPM's own wording. Some agencies and shift workers follow different rules, and OPM points them to their agency.
The Friday that belongs to next year
New Year's Day 2028 is a Saturday, so the day off is Friday, December 31, 2027. OPM lists that Friday in its 2028 table, not its 2027 one. A 2027 calendar built from the 2027 list alone misses it. Ours did, until September 26, 2026, when we checked it against OPM's 2028 table as well. The printable 2027 calendar here now marks it.
Days off are not the same for everyone
These are federal holidays. They bind federal offices, and many states, schools and employers follow them, but none of them has to.
- Banks. The Federal Reserve Banks are open on the three Fridays above. Your own bank sets its own hours, so check with it.
- Schools. School districts set their own calendars.
- Private employers. The Department of Labor puts it plainly: the Fair Labor Standards Act "does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations or holidays (federal or otherwise)." Holiday pay is a matter of company policy or contract.
The names differ too. The law says Washington's Birthday; most calendars, ours included, print Presidents' Day.

Daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November, under federal law (15 U.S.C. 260a). Hawaii and most of Arizona do not change their clocks.
